Tribute to Okeechobee Artist Dorthe M Chilcutt

Okeechobee Main Street presented from the private collection of Mary Beth Cooper and Cindy Underhill a beautiful collection from a local artist that said "when I am drawn to an area, I hope to capture it's feelings so that viewer will say, That's the way it is." The exhibit ran from December 11, 2014 - January 30, 2015.

Born Jan. 29, 1915 in Fond du Lac, Wis., Mrs. Chilcutt, formerly of Key West, had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1963. Holding a BS and MS in art education from the University of Wisconsin, Dorthe taught art in the Okeechobee County Public Schools until she retired in 1987. She continued to teach adult art classes for Indian River Community College. She was known, respected and loved by several generations of Okeechobee students as a caring and wise teacher. In addition, Dorthe was a world renown artist for her watercolors and other works of art. She was listed in Who's Who in American Education 1994, Who's Who in American Women 1995-96, and Who's Who in the World 1995-96. She had begun work toward a doctorate degree from the New York University and had traveled extensively in Europe on many painting trips.

The award-winning artist was a member of the Florida Water Colorist, the American Water Colorist, a charter member of the Key West Art Society, and the Ft. Pierce Art Gallery, now known as the Bennie Bachus Gallery. Additionally, she was a member of many other art associations and organizations throughout the state and country. Her passion for art and inspiring the appreciation of it to others, remained as one of her life's goals. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member and organist of the Christian Science Society.
